Surfers Against Sewage River Clean in Berkshire

On the morning of Saturday 28th January (8.45am) a few of our members met at the Thames Valley Park to complete a river clean along the Thames path in Berkshire.

We didn’t have to progress too far along the river path until we started to collect small pieces of trash and plastic and started to fill our first bag of 4!

Our easy going stroll suddenly turned into a fun challenge between us – who could collect the most plastic! Sadly we very quickly collected 4 full bags of plastic and trash in such a short distance. The particular stretch of river is populated and enjoyed by paddleboarders, swimmers and canoeists during the spring and summer months and we were shocked to see how much plastic and trash polluted our play ground. Our river clean was part of a much wider national campaign ran by Surfers Against Sewage, MiIlion Mile Clean campaign recruiting 100,000 volunteers to clean 10 miles of blue, green or city space.

It’s so important to us that we look after and protect our local environment, not only for ourselves but also for future generations to enjoy. There was a brilliant community spirit that brought us together and as always so good to be outdoors socially even if it was collecting trash!…

“In 2021 we had an idea. What if we could rally 100,000 volunteers to each clean 10 miles of blue, green or city space each year? To get together and feel the benefits of community spirit, being outdoors and making a difference? To pick up the trash that covers our coastlines, canal paths, bridleways and city streets? Now the biggest initiative of its kind in the UK, the Million Mile Clean is an annual action bringing Ocean Activists together to tackle plastic pollution head on. Closely tied to the UN Decade for Ocean Science, the Million Mile Clean will run every year until 2030, mobilising 1 million volunteers to clean over 10 million miles of UK landscape.
